PAINTINGS SALE - TUESDAY JANUARY 17TH 2012
This sale includes a collection of works by two artists who latterly lived and worked in Weston Super Mare. The
family have kept the paintings for many years, they have dutifully packed them every time they moved house and
then re-stacked them carefully but this time they felt that enough was enough and that the paintings should be sold
and enjoyed by others.
The first of these artists is Francis Cecil Horstmann (1906 - 1968). The Horstmann family have been living in or
near Weston for many generations, in the early 19th Century they were clockmakers and engineers infact there are
still connections with the engineering industry today in Bath.
He was born in Weston and studied at the School of Art there then latterly at the Royal College of Art London. He
was a watercolourist, calligrapher, interior designer and architect, he had a long career involved in teaching art and
design including Head of Design dept. Glasgow School and finally as Vice Principal and Head of Design School
West of England College of Art at Bristol. He had a number of books relating to design published, designed murals
for civic buildings and had a special interest in Heraldic design producing the new Coat of Arms for Weston
Borough and a number of Masonic Lodges. The sale includes a quantity of his watercolours and some of his
designs for murals as well as many examples of calligraphy and Heraldic designs - also a collection of ephemera
and photographs relating to him.
The second artist Lena Elizabeth Tarpley originated from Northampton but then lived in Bushey for many years,
she died in 1971. She also taught art and was a prominent member of the Watford and Bushey Art Society.
Working mainly in oils she specialised in floral and landscape subjects and was commissioned by firms such as
Cadburys to produce designs for their chocolate boxes. The sale includes many examples of her paintings, they
are a good example of the range of her styles from beautifully crafted floral arrangements to very strong bold Irish
landscapes.
The sale will also include a collection of watercolours by well known wild life artist Frances Fry. The residue of
paintings removed from her studio after her recent death, they include many views of Exmoor with ponies, stags
and some beautifully detailed works for Christmas cards.
Images with text will be available on this site shortly - the sale starts at 10am on Tuesday 17th January, viewing
from 9.30 - 5pm Monday 16th January.

JANUARY 2012 - ANTIQUES AUCTION
The first Antiques sale of 2012 will be on Tuesday January 31st - please note that all our sales will now start at
10.00am and that the viewing on Monday will finish at 6pm.
The sale includes a selection of prints and books by that perennial favourite "Snaffles" (or Charles Johnson Payne
as he was Christened!) also some by Lionel Edwards, George Armour and of course Cecil Aldin.
Still on the sporting/horse theme, there is a very attractive 19th Century oil painting of a chestnut horse standing in
an extensive landscape, although the painting is signed we are not totally sure of the artist as the signature
disappears into a rock! Adding to the paintings desirability is the fact that it is in its original gilt gesso frame - these
frames are notorious for falling to pieces but although there is some damage it is very slight considering the age.
The sale will also include sections of jewellery, silver, ceramics, glass, decorative items, watches and clocks.
A catalogue with illustrations will be on line about a week before the sale date - and it will also be available for live
bidding, go to www.the-saleroom.com to register.
A selection of lots in the sale are illustrated below.
